The primary reason why Mr. Ungar switched from gin to poker was that Stu was a little too skilled at it. So good was he, that no one was able stand up to him. Even the so-called professionals who were meant to be the most favorable at gin were decimated when they played against Stu Ungar. One such gin masters was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry suffered such a belittling defeat at the hands of mr. ungar that he apparently quit participating in it as a pro and never resurfaced at a gin tournament.

Of course, with a notoriety like that it wasn’t long before gamblers became shy of playing against Stu Ungar. He couldn’t find any games and in his desperation he began doing something no one had attempted before. He offered starting handicaps to potential competitors with the hope that they might compete with him if they believed they had an edge. He deliberately started from a disadvantageous arrangement and one account has it that stu even competed with a consistent bad egg. Mid contest, he received advice that the cheater was at it one more time but stu guaranteed that he deduced of the fraudulent activity and he would still acquire a win, which he did, of course.

The same problem followed Stu Ungar to vegas. He won so much that the casinos began requesting that he not to compete on their respective premises anymore. The explanation why was that other poker room players refused to sit at the table if he were playing.

Stu Ungar is recalled better for his achievements in holdem poker but he himself always said that he was a whole lot more accomplished at gin rummy.

He defeated Doyle Brunson in the World Series of Poker in Nineteen Eighty to become the youngest world champion. Because of his looks that made him seem far younger than he was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
