Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would frequently play against each other. Howard had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
