Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked playing various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The actual advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
