Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often play against each other. He was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
