Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker player on the globe by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative feedback from other people kill his dream of becoming one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He started competing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning experience and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
