Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, as well as several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
