Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, along with many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
