Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing range of betting choices and because you have several players battling for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi lo.
