Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to learn anything he could about the game. Phil routinely told his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the detrimental feedback from others destroy his dream of being one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
