Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the planet by many of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn everything he possibly could about the game. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse feedback from others kill his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for poker. Phil says that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
