Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
