Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker contender on the planet by many of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching the age of one. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to learn every little thing he could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental feedback from other people kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started playing intently after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his success. He knows he makes blunders every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
