Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor on the globe by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to learn anything he could about the game. He routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental feedback from other people kill his ambition of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
Phil began competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a normal basis.
