Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of betting options and because you have many players shooting for the high, as well as several shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
